Why My First IDE Is Still My First Choice

Your maximum time spent on any IDE makes you overpower in your coding. Something like this doesn't let me think about choosing any other IDE over NetBeans for Java development.

I have been developing Java Web Applications for 6 years and using NetBeans as IDE from the very first day. The main reason for choosing NetBeans over Eclipse (Most used IDE for Java Development back in 2014) is due to the client's requirement :D.

How I Started With Netbeans / Tips: How You Should Start With Any IDE

I am sharing my experience regarding using any IDE from the very start. As I mentioned I started with NetBeans IDE due to the client's requirement, I had no choice at that time to chose any other IDE but, I don't regret it as of now. So, firstly if you don't have any restrictions like I had, chose the IDE of your choice(If you have any :P) or google it for the best IDEs for your preferrable stacks.

Once you decide on the IDE, from the very first day think about minimizing your usage of the mouse. In short, use as many shortcuts as you can with your keyboard. It literally saves your time and makes you available for more development. Think about copy-paste for an example (The most used feature by any developer :P).

I am listing here some impressive shortcuts that I use during my development in NetBeans. I am keeping fonts as Bold for most used and Italic for my favorites.

  1. Alt + Shift + O It helps to open any file in your open projects. That's not just it, You can event use Regex to search any file. For example, I want to search for files related to User's Module I can search like User*.java, it will list all files Starts with User and end with .java. In my case, it's User.java, UserDao.java, UserController.java, UserService.java, and UserServiceImpl.java.
  2. Ctrl + Shift + F This command lets you search through your selected workspace and more interestingly with the Regex option as well.
  3. Ctrl-K Using this command you can go to the next word match. Let me explain, Suppose you want to see the usage of any variable like userModel select that userModel word and press Ctrl-K until you got satisfied 😁
  4. Alt-Insert This helps you to type less. Use this command to auto-generate code.
  5. Ctrl + Shift + D This shortcut is very useful when I want to copy multiple things from one file and paste those into different files without switching between files. Basically, when you copy any line or word, it will be stored in a kind of list and you can get that list by pressing Ctrl + Shift + D altogether. Very useful for me when I create an Entity and DTOs in Java web applications. You might have used this in any Microsoft product, this feature is called Clipboard. Cool! isn't it?
  6. Ctrl-E This will erase the whole line where your cursor is present. So, you don't need to move your hands to the mouse and select the whole line, Just press Ctrl + E and it will erase the current line.
Apart from the above, there are many shortcuts used for debugging and running your application you can check here.

Once you memorize the shortcuts and you became mastered in using those, it will be very difficult to move to another IDE for the same technology.

Almost all IDE have plugins to make your work easier. Whether it's GIT plugin to commit, push, or pull your changes or any other plugins.

One more feature about Netbeans I like most is they have the best history view. Honestly, I haven't checked any other IDE's history view but I call this as best because I don't have any complaint about this feature. Basically, I don't need anything more than Netbeans is providing in their History View.

You can compare between file content in the history view like,
  • You can check the Local History of a particular file
  • You can compare files with different GIT commits
  • You can compare files with Local and any GIT commit

Netbeans has proper code suggestions as well. Using Ctrl + Space, you can get the suggestions and on click of any suggestion from the list, you can read the JavaDocs. Which I think is required when you implementing any third party libraries.

On a closing note, I am not motivating you to chose NetBeans as your IDE for Java Development. But, I just want to motivate you guys to keep eye on the features of your IDE and make the most use out of it to improve your productivity.

Happy Coding, Happy Learning, Happy Earning!

Happy 2012! The world is not coming to an end

Doomsday as an economic and socio-political conceptThe greater part of 2011 was marked by the personal Doomsday for many even without the tidal waves and hellfire.
It was a year that brought down dictators and autocratic regimes. The mighty Muammar Gaddafi who ruled Libya with an iron fist was captured and shot to death by members of the Libyan National Army ending his three-decade regime. Terror mastermind Osama Bin Laden was killed by the American forces at his hideout in Pakistan’s Abbottabad.
The summer of discontent polarized nations giving rise to Arab Springs in Tunisia, Yemen, Jordan and Bahrain. Egyptians bearing candles thronged the Tahrir town Square to fight for democracy as the state police refused to shoot at them – tacitly indicating the direction in which the winds blew.
Edward Krudy of Reuters writes: The familiar themes of a shaky Europe, a political gridlock and volatile markets will be revisited by investors in 2012.
With a spiralling debt crisis in Europe, political upheaval around the world, and crumbling creditworthiness in major industrial nations, 2011 was a tough year to know where to invest. 2012 is unlikely to offer much respite. The S&P 500, a measure of the biggest US companies' market value, spent much of the year getting pushed up and down, flummoxing shorts and longs.
There are several reasons why next year may be nothing to look forward to. Many of the world's biggest developed economies are heading into recession, global stock markets look set to recoup only a fraction of their heavy losses in 2011, oil prices will head lower, and asset managers are unsure where best to invest. And these could be the best-case scenarios.
In India, people’s anger against unbridled corruption and malpractice in public offices found a vent in social activism as the political situation turned volatile. For the first time in many years the sense of immunity that politicians enjoyed received a severe jolt. People hit the streets in a united show of disdain for their elected representatives – triggering a sense of impending doom for the political class.

Doomsday myths
But nothing compares to the worldwide hysteria that December 21, 2012 has generated, encouraged by doomsayers as the day the world will end.
It prompted the NASA to officially debunk the theory. NASA scientists answered several questions on their website regarding 2012.
Here are the popular beliefs, origin and evolution of the Doomsday theory as explained by the NASA team.
*The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012. Then these two fables were linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 -- hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012.
*The Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period and another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.
*There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate centre of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.
*Nibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an Internet hoax. There is no factual basis for these claims. If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye.
*A reversal in the rotation of Earth is impossible. There are slow movements of the continents (for example Antarctica was near the equator hundreds of millions of years ago), but that is irrelevant to claims of reversal of the rotational poles. However, many of the disaster websites pull a bait-and-shift to fool people. They claim a relationship between the rotation and the magnetic polarity of Earth, which does change irregularly, with a magnetic reversal taking place every 400,000 years on average. As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesn’t cause any harm to life on Earth. A magnetic reversal is very unlikely to happen in the next few millennia, anyway.
While each day dawns magnificently crimson and violet, there is hope. Have a good year.

Congress, BJP resume Lokpal fight in new year

New Delhi: The Congress and BJP on Monday resumed the fight over Lokpal Bill in the new year, with both the national political parties blaming each other for the fiasco in the Rajya Sabha.
While the Congress party said that they were committed to a strong Lokpal Bill, the BJP said that the government is indulging in false campaign against the party on the anti-corruption bill.
"Our party is fighting for a strong Lokpal. BJP is not doing constructive politics," Congress Spokesperson Manish Tiwari said.

Leading the fight from the BJP side, spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said, "The Government is indulging in false campaign against the BJP on Lokpal bill. Why discussion was not started on Lokpal on the second day of special session in Rajya Sabha? Why Pranab did not speak in Rajya Sabha and why Leader of the Hose (Rajya Sabha) Manmohan Singh kept quiet."
"Why the Prime Minister chose to keep silence in Rajya Sabha when Parliamentary convention was shamed by the ruling party, how can he bring confidence and fight corruption," asked the senior BJP leader.
He said why Pranab Mukherjee did not intervene in the Rajya Sabha, asking is it because he knew that they did not enjoy the majority in the Rajya Sabha?
"This shows that Congress does not want the effective Lokpal because they are going to be the first causality of an effective Lokpal in the country. We will go to any extend to bring Lokpal Bill," he said.
However, he refused to comment on the Rajya Sabha Chairman's role. "We have serious reservations on the Rajya Sabha Chairman's ruling to adjourn the House on that day but will not comment further on this issue," he said.
